Only downloads 780x439 backdrops instead of 1920x1080!!?

Postby davesurfer » Sun May 02, 2010 1:24 am

Hi! I haven't been using metabrowser beta for several weeks and today I copied some new movies into my collection and decided to download all the metadata for them.

However, when selecting the backdrops I to download Meta browser only downloads a 780 x 439 version of the 1920 x 1080 image. Also, the movie's poster only downloads a 185 x 261 resolution version! I've uninstalled and re-installed metabrowser with the same problem.

I know that the pay-version 2.0 is out now and was wondering whether this restriction was put on the beta version now. I've read that the beta will still run fine though so I don't know...

Just for your info, I know there are 1920x1080 versions of these backdrops because a) They are on moviedb and b) MediaBrowser automically downloads them. Why I still use metabrowser is to control what I download and that the images can be stored locally on my drive.

Please help! THanks!! :)

Using ver. 09.02.09

Metabrowser v1 does not work with the changes tmdb made recently, and unfortunately source code was lost so v1 will never be updated. Need to wait on v2.

Interesting that the new code on moviedb would reduce the resolution because metabrowser beta is no longer compatible.

Yeah so, I pretty much HAVE to upgrade and buy version 2.0 because the beta is severely crippled now. Good thing moviedb updated it's code because otherwise we'd find no reason to go to the PAY version 2.0 of metabrowser eh? Planned obsolescense. I had no issues dealing with the tonnes of bugs that metabrowser beta had (such as not displaying some movies or finding meta for or not connecting to moviedb or loosing metadata or....blah blah) because it was free, but to pay for it? And there's no trial out there? And it doesn't support TV Shows? Frack it.

Oh well, I'm going to go back to manually putting stuff in. For the little bit of extra time it takes to find and download pictures and stuff everytime I download a new movie it's not that big a deal compared to having to sign up for yearly subscription for version 2.0.

This was not "Planned obsolescense" or any type of conspirarcy...a coincidence, yes, that's all it is.

There is a trial available: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=5929 ... most of your answeres will be in that thread...if not, then maybe in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=6074

As for the tons of bugs that you ran into in v1.0, if you would have come to the forums and asked for input/help I would have helped you sort it out.

Take Care

I've been using v1 for a very long time and while there were some issues, "tons of bugs" is far from the truth. Since you have been using it only "several weeks" it is more likely you were running into issues with tmdb being down.

The new code did not change the resolution of the images, it changed the API such that downloading the image is no longer happening as it once did...it now downloads the preview image (lower resolution). It sucks...but that's progress for you. Tmdb is much better off for the changes they have made in my opinion. Metabrowser is much better off with V2 in my opinion as well. It sucks that it happened so soon after release, but that's the breaks.

As was mentioned above, there is a trial out there...try it and you may feel differently. If you don't feel differently, then don't buy it. But, in my honest opinion it is much better and in a short time will be a whole lot better with the way the plug-ins work, when TV support is added, etc. and well worth the price.

It just amazes me how you go from a very cordial post asking for help to a rant about conspiracy, bugs, etc. in less than 12 hours.

Sorry I came off that way. It was unfortunetly most of my emotions talking and not my head: I was just very frustrated, it was late, and I had accidently overwritten a pile of hi-res jpgs and had to go in manually and replace them. MediaBrowser was also acting weird and movie covers were disappearing...again.

Thanks for the link for the trial, I will check that out. It would be good if the full version was available for 30 day time limit like most software offered instead of a feature-reduced one. I would've liked to just pay a flat cost of say $50 for the software instead of a annual subscription. I do however realize that if moviedb, imdb and other database sources keep changing than the software needs to be continuously modified.

there's always the option to collect the metadata manually by yourself if you dont think paying is worth it.
