Can we please give the MB team a chance to implement it in the main code line first though? It's not a pay product yet, so maybe they will have a heart and put this in.

Camb, if you could forward your code changes to Sam / Soul, and show them how easy it was to do, I'm REALLY hoping we can do something to avoid code branches.

You rock, GJ man!

They aren't even working on bug fixes at the moment so I tend to doubt they are going to have any interest in implementing this.

It's not a matter of priority vs. non-priority.

Please understand the significance of branching a codeline, especially a codeline with existing bugs, and especially an existing codeline with bugs that will be going non-open source in the near future.

p.s. Who exactly told you they weren't working on bug fixes?

Even though the actual code changes to MB are small and fairly simple, adding the ability to dynamically change entry points once MB is already installed is more complex. The problem with the example from http://codeandconfig.blogspot.com/2009/02/if-you-would-like-to-have-multiple.html is you have to unregistered/register MB every time you want to add/remove an entry point which is unrealistic.

I do have a way to allow up to 5 entry points (in windows 7 haven't tried it in Vista yet) and dynamically change them (add/remove/modify) by using the MB config tool. So most of time will be spent creating a tool to modify registry values.

I have to create another branch because I highly doubt Sam is going to let me work on the trunk (nor would I want him to let me).

But I am trying to make my changes as small and modular as possible so they can easily be merge into the trunk.

Very cool Cam! Hopefully Sam/Soul will see the light, and merge your changes into the trunk for the last solid release of the app before branchfest '09 starts (I have a feeling when it goes to pay, there will be several versions of it out there, floating away from the rest of the mass).

I wish there were something more we could do to show them how useful this feature is.

Once I get it ready for testing, I am sure they will try it out. Maybe they will, as you said, SEE THE LIGHT!

I compiled the code from the multiple_entries branche. Creating an installer went fine, so as installing MB, but when the configuration wizard opens i get an error:

Error fetching entry point for {fc9abccc-36cb-47ac-8bab-03e8ef5f6f24}.Error receiving registry key.

I know you said somewhere that it's not stable yet, but maybe this 'bug report' will be helpfull somehow...

Thx

Just wait a couple of days until I can get it stable.. I do have it working but there is still a lot of manual intervention involved. The reason it didn't work for you is all the entrypoint were not setup.

*Update*

I am still working on this, but it is taking me longer than I thought. All the media browser changes are done (for a while now), but I am still working on making it user friendly.

Here is a screen shot of what I am currently working on.
Image

Whats still left to do:
- More user input error checking (this will be the most time consuming)
- More functionality in the configurator (sorting entry points, ect..)
- Allow direct entry into plugin's (like filmtrailers and itunes trailers)
- Modify installer to add new registry entries (I am having problems with this. So if anyone has experience with WIX and would like to help, let me know).
- Testing on Vista and Win7

I am also debating on changing the layout of the configurator screen. After playing with it, I am not sure how intuitive it is.
