ehExtHost.exe hogging Resources

ehExtHost.exe hogging Resources

Postby criticalbill » Mon Jul 06, 2009 7:17 am

Hi, I've been trying to put together an ultra low power Media centre machine based on the new Zotac ION motherboards, I have everything working as I need it now, except one thing... Unfortunately its the most important bit, the new MediaBrowser 2.1.1... The problem relates to ehExtHost.exe while I am watching a HD MKV file. I can play the file without problems from the native Media Centre interface (CPU Usage stays at 30-50% usage) , but if I run it from within Media browser the playback is gittery. This seems to be caused by ehExtHost.exe sucking CPU power when the file is being played, it is bouncing around between about 10% and 60%, which is enough to impact the playback. If I kill the process, playback continues without problems, just MediaBrowser is no longer running...
Could anyone help me, do you know what ehExtHost.exe is doing, is there anyway to stop it using this level of resources during playback? I have tried stepping back to the previous version of Media browser 2.0.11, and I do not have the same problem (ehExtHost.exe CPU usage sits at 5-10%), but I do not get the enhancements bought in with the new version.

Thanks in advance..

Fixing issues in this area are fairly tricky, its possible that disabling the resume functionality in MB would help (which is not user configurable at the moment) otherwise its going to have to wait for when we move the work out of ehexthost

I am having this issue to - around 65 per cent then just maxes out at 100 - only seems to happen to mkv and that particualr process.- will the next version shift the work out or how to configure the setting you mentioned.

Playing the file withouth MB is fine (around 30 per cent CPU).

This also didnt happen to me in the previous version

Hi, first, thanks for the excellent work with the mediabrowser, love it!

I've also been monitoring the activity of ehExtHost and its causing alot of disk I/O

It's constantly writing/reading to C:\Windows\CSC\v2.0.6\namespace\path

Easy to monitor with Sysinternals process monitor, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysi ... 96645.aspx

Is that normal?

Hi All. I really like this product and give a lot of credit to all who continue its development. I have also run into this problem and have found that even when I close Media Center on the host PC it does not reduce the CPU load, which was sitting at an average of 50% just for this exe. I found that when I run MB under my XBox that it has problems bring up the main folders when the buttons are pressed for movies/tv series/etc (the options you tile your top of your heirarchy to be under the configuration tool.) I ffind that I can initially move up into the breadcrumb area and view/select content from there, and move between the main selections (with some delay), but when I try to select the main folder MB freezes solid almost all of the time. Rarely does it come out of it. When I look at the host PC ehexthost is hogging 50-60% of a dual core 3G processor with 4 G RAM. When I turn off the Xbox it release the hosts PC burden. When I start up the xbox the load is nil. When I start MB the load is nil (the ehexthost service has not started yet). When I select an item from the main bar at the bottom of the MB main window MB does nothing (I can no longer navigate and the selected option does not appear) and my CPU usage on the host PC goes up to 50-65 or so % . I'm providing this long-winded post as data that I hope will ease the troubleshooting of this problem. This product is really close to be A1....

By the way I'm using MB V2.1.1, The Xbox is the brand new version (Manuf. 8/09) and does not have any issues responding to commands in any other way. Will be glad to supply specifics on the host or Xbox if so desired.

Done a bit more research here as this bug stops me from using MB about 70% of the time. Sometimes it runs fine. Sometimes it just won't start. When running fine ehexthost is down in the <10% range. When not working, I try to launch MB in on the MCE, the icons all disappear as if the app is starting, and the screen remains blue. A switch I have next to the Xbox shows increase traffic. On the Host PC, ehexthost changes from 0 to 1 % CPU to about 100% cpu for approx. 30 seconds, and then backs off to about 55 %. Why is works some of the time and not others I have no idea. Sometimes this change with no operator interaction (ie: The PC is on overnight with no one touching it. It won't be working when I go to sleep, and it will work fine in the AM without ever touching the host. Note the MB has always worked fine for me on the host PC and that I've only seen this behavior on the MCEs (of which I have two, which both behave the same way a the same time (MB works or not on both of them at the same time.) Hope this helps.

I'm trying out MB (for the first time) V2.1.1.0 beta on a Windows 7 Ultimate x64 machine with 4GB of RAM. Media Browser works wonderfully when I first launch it. However, when the machine has been idling for a few hours I go back to it and see that ehexthost.exe is consuming over 2.5GB of memory and growing while CPU usage is also anywhere between 30 - 60%. At this point Media Browser and MCE are frozen and I have to kill the process using Task Manager.
