A question to devs (soultaker ?)

A question to devs (soultaker ?)

Postby PierreLo » Tue Jun 02, 2009 11:58 am

Hi,

Sorry if this has been covered before, I know ths was asked, but I don't know if this is in scope for next release. It is not a feature request here, but rather a question.
Will the "genre" problem with folder and subfolders (for example collections) be addressed in 2.0.12 ? I mean for the moment, if you create a folder to put the "lord of the rings" collection in subfolders in it, then the genre for the high level folder is always "unknown".
Will this be solved in the new release ? With all the great collection icons made by Settingsun and others in the Fan Artwork forum, it would be great to have a genre view with these collection folders in it.

Soultaker, is this planned ?

Thanks :)

You know what that is a good question... I don't know the answer off the top of my head - I'll have an answer later.

OK.

I'll wait then. This is the only thing I would consider as a (light) flaw in MB. I could have lived with that (I even removed all my collection folders and brought each movie up one level) but now these collection icons are something I really want to use...

Thanks for the feedback.

I did also notice this when helping Ebr with testing his ParentalControl and posted about it in ebr's PC thread.
Would really love to see this one fixed, it destroys the otherwise (Perfect) Genre Filtering View for me. :)

I did also discoverd another small bug but I guess it's not PC bug but a MB:
If I have for example Star Wars Triology nested inside a folder this way:

<Mainfolder>
<Star Wars>
Star Wars 1
Star Wars 2
Star Wars 3

then I go to filter by genre in the <Mainfolder> with all my movies and find that the <Star Wars> emty folder is listed as (Unknow), shouldn't an empty folder be skipped for checking genres since it's just a Containing folder and not a Title ?

Hi Pierre, I was at work earlier and couldn't reply. It is unlikely we will be able to look into this issue before the release. I'm afraid you will have to keep your movies one-level up for the time being.

OK, soultaker.

Thanks for the feedback. It's a shame as I pointed this out a long time ago, and so did others. Anyway, I don't mind waiting for 2.0.13 to fix this, as long as it comes out in less than 3 days after 2.0.12... :mrgreen: :mrgreen:
More seriously, this sounds like an important issue to me, as Smyken said, it pretty much prevents from having a nice Genre filtering (especially with those incredible collection icons designed by SettingSun).

Do you have any idea how complicated this would be ? This is something MyMovies has been handling quite well for a long time. Would this imply deep change into MB code structure ? If not in 2.0.12, is there any chance it would be put on high priority for the next release ?
(just out of curiosity)

Thanks for the ever amazing work, and also for being present here in the forums, and always answering posts in a constructive way (well, until recently in the Fan Artwork forum at least :lol: :lol: :lol: )

Really good questions, however they are more suited to ask Sam - I am not familiar enough with the new architecture folder/item mechanism to accurately comment on them as I tend to focus more on usability issues rather than architectural

This issue has been around a long time.

The other day I decided to write a small application that for me resolved the problem.

This application reads the mymovie.xml file for each movie and will create a genere (actor, year or studio) folder in a specified location and create a shortcut link to the folder which the movie belongs in the genere folder, it also retains the folder structure.

As you can imagine, it would create an enormous amount of links, I have about 220 movies, each with about about 4 generes, that would mean about 1000 shortcuts. It's was built for movies only (I don't use the TV Series side of MB).

Anyway if there is any interest I'll post it.

Cheers 8-)

@Soultaker,

Any chance Sam sees this thread ?

@HCasse

Thanks for the hint. Sorry for being a bit dumb here but I don't fully understand how your solution works . Can you explain with a bit more details how it helps dealing with genre for collection folders ?
Maybe explain this on the following example ?

I have one folder called X:\Movies\Alien Collection
Inside this, I have :

X:\Movies\Alien Collection\Alien 1\
X:\Movies\Alien Collection\Alien 2\
X:\Movies\Alien Collection\Alien 3\
X:\Movies\Alien Collection\Alien 4\

Currently, if I display by genres, MB will put the "Alien Collection" folder in the "Unknown" genre.
Can you detail what your app will do to solve this ?
Sorry again to be a pain in you know where.
Maybe posting your utility will be enough to make me understand ?

Thanks
