How To: Setup a IMDB Genre Folder

Postby DemonSeed » Thu May 28, 2009 3:29 pm

It doesn't seem to be commonly known but salami's movie organizer has a setting so that when it checked and pointed to a genre folder
it will automatically put a shortcut in the genre folder for every movie it logs using the IMDB genre categories listings.

Then you can just show MB your genre folder and not have all of those useless categories in your list.

***(Do Note that a lot of movies like the one above will list multiple *stupid genres, before you save movie info click on the ones you don't want and remove them)***

First do this then when a movie is Saved a shortcut will be add automatically to the folder that you showed salami's
BUT ONLY IN IMDB GENRES LISTING!!!

Yeaaa!!!

Good & Easy IMDB Genres in Media Browser!!! Yeaaa......
And all you do is create one folder and salami's does the rest while your logging in movies. But you will need to log every movie you have for this to work.

Then Show the MB config tool the Single genres folder with the the IMDB Genre Folders inside and Your On Easy Street!

After you finished place your choice of backdrop+folder.jpg or png inside every folder and then use the config tool to show MB your new genre folder.
Now you will have all your own chosen genres icons and and backdrops while you browse.
It's SoooOooo Easy!

Note that this overwrites your mymovies.xml so any info manually entered into Meta Browser will be gone.

I have had a problem with this that I was wondering if someone could help me out with. I have been going through making my shortcuts in a Genre folder using salami by clicking on each movie and then saving it. This leave Folders in the Genre dir with names like Comedy and such. Inside those folders are shortcuts to movies of that type. I set up MB to point to the Genre directory for my genre's. The problem is even though there is only 1 shortcut per movie in each directory when I click on that folder in MB it shows several sometimes up to 6 different copies of the same movie.

Please help before I give up and scrap the whole directory.

Hi,

I know the previous post was a long time ago, but if you have say The Bourne Idendity with a genre of Thriller and Action, if you leave both of these genre's under salumi's organiser a shortcut will be created in both genre folders. If you only wanted one shortcut per movie you would need to only have one genre listed for each movie.

i could be barking up the wrong tree though

No sadly it will not do a auto process, plus if you have done and custom info in your meta data it will rewrite it also, so that might not be the best way to go for you. Sorry not to help more.

I have a very long way around the problem with overwriting the folder.jpg files.

Salumi's Movie Organiser will only overwrite the current files you have if the file name is the same. So if you can rename the current folder.jpg files to something else say folder1.jpg and then run Salumi's MO to edit the genres, delete the new folder.jpg file and then rename the old ones back you should have all the current data updated with the old poster files working.

The part that is the hard bit now is the renaming of hundreds of files, which i may be able to make happen very quickly, Casperinmind a user on here created a file that would change the extension or names of files stored within a parent folder. Having said this i can not gurantee that it will not cause more hassle and therefore strongly advise you to run a couple of tests.

Any question let me know,

P.S i will ask Casper if he minds me uploading it for you to download.

You can rename multiple files in vista simply by going to the parent directory (for example the movie directory) and then entering folder.jpg in the search box. It will find all the files, select them all then right click and hit rename. Change them to folder1.jpg at is will rename each one that. Of cource this only works with files in different folders (which of course they are).

As always, use at your own risk...but I have done this several times on files.

Also, there is a nifty program called "Name it your own way" (get it here) which is a power search and rename program.

Ahh, this could work as well.

I am not to sure if it allows you to change the file extension as well but i could not see a reason why not. If anyone wants this script let me know as Casper has no problems with others using it.
